When I priced 16 GB of LPDDR3 RAM on Newegg, it was $169-$179.

I chose to bite the bullet and have Apple upgrade the RAM to 16 GB, mostly because I plan to keep this machine for at least 5 or 6 years, and I want to future-proof it as much as possible. I ordered the 2014 2.8 GHz mini with a 1 TB Fusion Drive. Other folks may feel differently, and that's fine. This means more to me than multi-core performance and being able to buy my RAM off Newegg. Two Thunderbolt ports mean I can upgrade storage or my display easily in the future. With the 2014 minis, single-core performance is improved, and the graphics are better too. Would I like to see a more-powerful mini? Sure! But really, these machines are not slouches-the mid and high end minis are equivalent to the 13" MacBook Pros, and those are perfectly respectable machines. But with that said, I don't agree with those who are tripping over themselves to pick up 2-year old minis. I've been waiting patiently for the new minis, and I'll admit I was disappointed about the soldered RAM and lack of quad-core options. I've upgraded the RAM and/or hard disk in every one of my Macs, and I've kept most for 5 years or more.

I've owned a 1991 Mac LC, a 1999 iMac DV, a 2006 MacBook, and a 2009 MacBook Pro. I'm a lifelong Mac user, programmer, and tech enthusiast. I'm not trying to start a war, I'm just not getting why there is so much hate about that. How the new Mac Minis processor (entry and mid) would stack up against the current Mac lineup?ĭoes the dual-core-ness get in the way of the actual OSX experience? I am missing something, or the last Mac Mini really isn't so detached from the rest of the Apple computers? Actually, it has a little less horse power than iMacs middle-tier's (for usual workloads, obviously).

Actually, for the Macbook Air, that is all there is.įor the middle tier Mac Mini, the processor is similar to Macbook Pro Retina 13", which is considered a great performance notebook for almost everything where I live. Yes, I think the soldered RAM was uncalled for, that really is a big loss.Ĭhecking the rest of the Apple current product line, I noticed something.įor the entry models of Macbook Air, iMac and Mac Mini, all have similar specification Haswell dual-core 1.4GHz processors. Most of it (all of it?) was about the changes in the RAM modules and dual core processors. So, as usual for a responsible consumer, I started research about my target product and I was amazed to see so much hate towards it. (just kidding about the last one) (or am I?) (yes. I have an entry Macbook Air 11" 2012 and I'm about to buy a Mac Mini 2014 to be my primary computer.Ībout myself: I am a computer scientist, so most of my computer usage is about coding, youtube or porn.
